Most of the technological systems are subjected to a gradual wear process which, in course of time causes an inevitable failure. Since these failures produce huge financial losses, a condition-based maintenance is carried out which usually enables of such items before failure occurs. To do this, the state or the wear level of such systems is recurrently inspected/measured throughout their operating life. Any preventive replacement has a cost that increases with the residual life of the replaced system. The crucial issue is to identify the optimal replacement time that reconciles the conflicting demands of preventing operational failures and avoiding premature replacements. This paper proposes a mathematical model using the failure data. (26 refs.)
