In order to maintain a marine diesel engine to an efficient level, we have to examine, adjust and overhaul periodically the cylinder liners and the piston rings which are the most important components in a combustion cavity of diedel engines. We analyzed the wear down records of the cylinder liners and piston rings of the main dynamo engines (No. 1, D₁; No. 2, D₂) of the T/V Kakuyo-Maru (1,044.38 G/T), Faculty of Fisheries, Nagasaki University, through 14 years from 1977 to 1991, for clarifying the relationships between service hour (Hr) and wear down ratio (α). The results are as follows: For D₁, longitudinal: α=0.6846exp(-2.6623•110⁻⁵・Hr)(1/100mm/1000hr)(r=0.7398) athwart: α=0.4557exp(-2.3072・10⁻⁵・Hr)(1/100mm/1000hr)(r=0.8979) For D₂, longitudinal: α=0.5310exp(-1.9682・10⁻⁵・Hr)(1/100mm/1000hr)(r=0.7251) athwart: α=0.4329exp(-1.8379.10⁻⁵・Hr)(1/100mm/1000hr)(r=0.8446) It was found sufficient to examine the cylinder liners examine every second year, though thy have been examined every year. This suggests the possibility to decrease the running cost of the ship.
