Hormonal side effects, frequently reported with antipsychotic medications, have been rarely associated with the use of antidepressant medications (Egberts et al., 1997). Amongst antidepressant drugs, these side effects have been rarely reported with Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's). It has been reported that increase in prolactin levels is responsible for these side effects. Escitalopram is the latest addition to the list of SSRI's and is a widely prescribed antidepressant both by psychiatrists and physicians. We hereby report a 25 year old female with a diagnosis of Tension Type Headache with Depressive Disorder who developed galactorrhea while on escitalopram and had normal prolactin levels. Potential mechanisms underlying galactorrhea in such cases are briefly discussed.
