Workshop proceedings: DHA as a required nutrient.

This special issue of Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids presents papers emerging from a June 2008 workshop focused on the scientific evidence for Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) As An Required Nutrient in the human diet.Sponsored by Martek Biosciences Corporation of Columbia, MD, selected experts active in DHA research in the basic and medical sciences gathered at the Baltimore Waterfront Marriott Hotel on June 20 and 21, 2008, to discuss the latest evidence for routine inclusion of preformed DHA in the modern Western diet. The stated objectives of the workshop were: (1) To review the current state of science in DHA human nutrition; (2) To determine whether or not the current state of DHA science demonstrates that DHA is an essential nutrient and therefore, required in the human diet; and (3) To identify DHA intake levels that support optimum health.
