摘要

Longue Vue was the family home of Edgar Stern, a successful cotton broker and philanthropist, and his wife Edith, a pioneering philanthropist who funded schools for African-American children in the rural South. In the mid-1950s, Edgar Stern chaired anadvisory committee that created a new residential subdivision in New Orleans, a few miles north of Longue Vue, which became Pontchartrain Park, designed and marketed for middle-class black home-ownership. This was the first planned community of single-family homes that billed itself as providing "truly equal" residential and recreational opportunities to African-Americans in the segregated city of New Orleans. In the ensuing years, the Sterns retained their interest and involvement in this developing neighborhood.
