Dr. Dransfield in particular provided a critical piece of information by directing George to an article in Principes (Read, R.W. 1979. "Live Storage of Palm Pollen." Principes23:33-35). The article, published before the Internet age yet too recent tobe scanned by Biodiversity Heritage Library or similar scholarly sources, was pivotal to the success of the pollination project. Without the reference, the information would have remained unnoticed, hidden in a literary "black hole." Instead, George wasable to follow the drying technique outlined in the article, prior to sending the pollen to HawaTi. In the high-wire trapeze act of the botanical world, by the time the pollen arrived in Honolulu, it appeared that FBG had missed the small window of floral receptivity. The flowers were pollinated anyway.
