Antipsychotics for Neuropsychiatric Symptoms of Dementia-Safety and Efficacy in the Context of Informed Consent

Appropriate use of antipsychotic medications in older adults with dementia can be challenging due to several important safety concerns. This article reviews the risks and benefits of using antipsychotic medications in the treatment of patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia through the framework of an informed-consent conversation. Informed-consent discussions help provide patients, surrogate decision-makers, and caregivers with the essential data necessary to make informed treatment choices.
