EFFECT OF SIZE, DISTANCE AND DATE OF PLANTING OF MOTHER SETS ON QUALITY OF KHARIF ONION (ALLIUM CEPA L.)

A field trial conducted during the kharif season of 1998-99 and 1999-2000 to study the effect of si-e of onion mother sets, distance and date of planting of sets on the quality of bulbs of the kharif onion cv N-53 under Agra conditions. Size of onionmother sets and distance of sets produced maximum percentage of bolting, diameter, neck thickness, specific gravity, dry weight, juice content of bulb and dry weight of leaves, significantly increased with increasing size of mother sets and wider distance of sets, whereas TSS percentage of bulb was significantly increased with decreasing size of sets and closer distance (15 x 10 cm) of planting. The early planting (21st August) of sets produced significantly maximum diameter, neck thickness, specific gravity, dry weight, juice contant of bulb, TSS percentage of bulb and dry weight of leaves and minimum percentage of bolted bulbs compaicu 10 September's planting.
