Amla (Aonla), the Indian gooseberry is an important fruit crop of the tropics and subtropics. Amla fruit is highly nutritive and popularly known as 'Amrit phal'. It is very rich in vitamin C, pectin and minerals. Fruit is valued high among indigenousmedicines in India. It is useful in hemorrhages, diarrhea, chronic dysentery, diabetes, jaundice, dyspepsia and cough. It is the main ingredients in chawanprash. It is one of the three ingredients in Triphla used in treatment of headache, biliousness, constipation and enlarged liver. Amla has a great potential due to its high medicinal and nutritive values; and high productivity even on marginal lands. It is a hardy tree and can be successfully grown in variable agro climatic and soil conditions. The mature tree can tolerate temperature as high as 46° C. Thus, it is not much influenced by hot winds and cold to some extent. However, the young plants need protection from frost during winter. It is a potential crop for the marginal soils and degraded lands such as saline and sodic soils, ravines and dry and semi dry regions.
