At the time of storage of fresh grains, empty godowns may have some insects hidden in cracks and crevices. These insects are visible only on careful examination. Cereals and pulses form a staple diet and are stored by the producers in their home and by the traders and the government agencies in godowns for one year or more. After harvesting grains are supposed to be dried until their moisture content is less than 9 per cent (ideal for storage). The grains absorb moisture from the damp godowns, improper receptacles and sometimes from uncertain weather. For rapid multiplication of insect, warm and humid climate and high moisture content of the grains are highly congenial. When the grains are harvested in the field, they are free from insect infestation. The insect reach the grains through the infested gunny bags or receptacles and through the storage of fresh grains in godowns already having infested grains. At time of storage of fresh grains, even empty godowns might have numerous insects hidden incracks and crevices. The insects are not visible and an experienced person can notice them by careful examination.
