Among the various factors responsible for reducing cane yield and deterioration of cane quality, the sensitivity of sugarcane plant to low temperature stress is well known. Frost spells in the month of January ceases the plant growth, causes leaf damage. Severe frost causes the death of young leaves. Sugarcane is one of the physiologically most efficient converter of solar energy into sugar. During peak growth period, it can produce about half a tone of dry matter per hectare per day. Sugarcane is atropical crop grown in frost-free and warm climate. Optimal temperature for growth varies from 27-38°C. The warm and humid rainy season (July-September) induces rapid stem elongation while onset of winter reduces the plant growth.
