This past February, nearly 300 people crammed into a motel meeting room to attend the first cash rent public auction in the Mason City, Iowa, area. About 25 active bidders raised hands or nodded heads as two-year leases for more than 2,250 tillable corn/soybean acres in 14 tracts went up for grabs. After the final "going once, twice, sold," the tillable-acre winning bids ranged from a low of dollar 325 for 78 acres (62 tillable, subject to flooding) to dollar 520 for 108 acres (all tillable).
