Insect pests of rabi oilseeds and their management

Major insect pests threatening the rabi oilseeds in Punjab are mustard aphid, mustard sawfly, painted bug, cutworms, head borer (American bollworm), hairy caterpillar and green peach aphid. Farmers growing oilseeds suffer heavy losses. With renewedstress on diversification, oilseed crops provide an imperative alternative to rice-wheat cropping sequence. Among oilseeds, rapeseed and mustard (raya, gobhi sarson, toria and taramira) and sunflower are important crops grown in rabi season in Punjab. Increase in the incidence of insect pests is one of the major bottlenecks in achieving higher yield potential of these crops. Major insect pests threatening the rabi oilseeds in Punjab are mustard aphid, mustard sawfly, painted bug, cutworms, head borer (American bollworm), hairy caterpillar and green peach aphid. Farmers growing oilseeds suffer heavy losses due to depredation of these pests when they fail to take proper remedial measures. Hence, farmers are advised to take following control measures wellin time to save these valuable crops from the menace of insect pests.
