Physical punishment in comparison to positive reinforcement is not only less effective but could prove quite harmful to the child. Hence, the parents should avoid using punishment for the child. Parents are expected to automatically know about rearingand disciplining of their children inspite of the fact that many parents are not aware of the difference between discipline and punishment, between being very affectionate and nagging, between caring and neglecting. Therefore, every parent must master the skills of disciplining children in an appropriate manner. The child can be made to distinguish between the desirable and undesirable, good and bad traits by complementing good behaviour and setting consistent and appropriate limits for unwanted traits. If ever the child needs to be punished, the punishment should be appropriate to age and the fault committed by the child. Hence, the parents should avoid using punishment for the child, which may be physically and psychologically destructive to him and discipline him through motivation and encouragement.
