It is indicated that the economics of plant protection concerns both "means" and purposes as well as the relations between them. The "means" include: the plants on the fields; agricultural products in stock rooms; plant protection equipment; plant protection products; methods of plant protection; and the cooperating institutions and organizations involved in carrying out plant protection tasks. The purpose of plant protection economics is the economic management of those "means". The main task is to reduce the negative impact of harmful organisms. In studying plant protection economics, it is suggested that special emphasis should be paid to two areas. The first one includes general problems of plant protection against pests pertaining to all cultivations. This requires knowledge of the pests' harmfulness, the economic characteristics of plant protection, the methods for making cost calculations for plant protection treatments, the rules for analysing the economic effectiveness of plant protection treatments, and the systemic character of the infrastructure. The second area includes detailed research concerning individual cultivations and individual pests.
