Occurrence of alternaria mycotoxins in seeds of different rape cultivars.

The presence of pathogenic fungi and pathogen-produced mycotoxins in oilseed rape can cause economic losses due to spoilage, affect human health and result in reduced animal productivity and increased mortality. Naturally contaminated oilseed rape was analysed for fungal infection level and Alternaria toxin content. The predominant fungal species present in different cultivars samples were A. brassicae, A. brassicicola and A. alternata. Experimental evidence showed that the spring rape cultivars had a higher levels of fungal infection and toxin content. The mean number of Alternaria spp. cultures from different rape cultivars ranged from 0.5 to 22.8 for sterilized and 1.2-13.5 for non-sterilized rapeseed. The mycotoxin content for different cultivars ranged from 9 micro g/kg (ppb) in seeds of spring cultivar Bios to 33 micro g/kg (ppb) in seeds of spring cultivar Swinto for alternariol and from 9 to 29 micro g/kg (ppb) for alternariol monomethyl ether, respectively.
