Weed infestation of legume-cereal mixtures associated with different quantitative and qualitative composition.

Studies were carried out in 2004-2006 to determine the impact of species composition of legume-cereal mixture (faba bean+spring wheat, field peas+spring triticale) as well as component share in the mixture (100+0, 75+25, 50+50, 25+75, 0+100%) on weed infestation. A significantly lower weed number and airy dry mass of weeds were found in the mixtures of peas+spring triticale compared with faba bean+spring wheat mixtures. Lower weed infestation in the mixtures resulted from a decrease of legume share in the mixture coupled with an increase in the share of cereal plant. Experimental factors did not significantly influence the species composition of weed populations in the field. The following weed species dominated: Agropyron repens, Capsella bursa pastoris, Chenopodium album, Polygonum aviculare, Stellaria media and Viola arvensis.
