Polyacrylate pressure-sensitive adhesive was used as a model substance of the secondary stickies to study the effect of the cationic polymers and calcium ions on its stability and depositability.Results showed that cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) and cationic starch with high molecular weight and low charge density destabilized the secondary stickies particles by the mechanism of inter-particle bridging.Stickies deposition was induced at a low addition level of cationic polymers in pulp suspension,but the deposit was reduced at higher dosage of cationic polymers.CPAM was able to fix the stickies particles on the fibers to reduce the stickies deposits at high dosage.Cationic starch was able to adsorb on the stickies particles and reduce their stickiness.At high dosage,cationic starch fixed the stickies to the fiber surfaces,reducing the amount of deposit.The presence of a certain concentration of calcium ions improved the fixation of anionic secondary stickies on fibers with addition of CPAM,but the presence of both calcium ions and cationic starch could lead to more stickies deposits than that caused by cationic starch alone.
