The diagnosis of diabetes is indirectly based on demonstrating hyperglycaemia rather than its underlying molecular pathophysiology. Arguably, there has been relatively little progress in its diagnosis over the millennia, with moving from a qualitatively taste-based urinalysis in Roman times to a more palatable quantitative blood analysis.
