ACTUAL MEANING OF THE TERM 'ADAKITE' AND ORIGIN OF THE VARIED ROCK-TYPES IT IS REFERRING TO

The rock group with adakitic characteristics consists of varied rocks that were engendered by different magmatic processes, most of them related to the magmatic arcs, in which the metasomatic activity played an important rol. Thus, they are represented by Archean and Cambrian granitoid plutons like those from the Canadian Shield and the South Carpathians, and also by the volcanic structures occurring along the Circum Pacific island arc and within the Carpathian continental volcanic arc. Rocks bearing such characteristics occur in the continental intra-plate volcanic structures,too, in which they were also affected by metasomatic processes. Under these circumstances the term 'adakite' came to be used from a particular term designating a single rock-type to an adjectival term referring to a group of rocks with adakitic caracteristics, as the tholeiitic and banatitic generic terms are also used for other rock groups.
