ECHA: Building for the future

I see 2014 as a year of consolidation and moving forward for ECHA to build for the future. In a sense, the turning point began with the adoption last year of our five-year strategic plan for the period 2014-2018. The focus of the first of these five years will be less on meeting milestones set by legislation, and more on completing the necessary sound foundations for the success of the ambitious multi-annual plan. As you may know, ECHA’s five-year plan is based on four strategic objectives. The first two are breakthrough objectives: to maximise high-quality information to enable the safe manufacture and use of chemicals; and to mobilise intelligent use of information to identify and address chemicals of concern. The next two objectives are enablers for all our work: to become a hub for regulatory expertise to address new scientific challenges; and to embrace current and new legislative tasks efficiently and effectively while adapting to resource constraints. The strategic plan also reflects the agency’s assessment of the REACH Review undertaken by the European Commission last year.
