Fats, Oils & Grease and the public sanitary sewer

The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) was founded in 1954 and started operations and maintenance in 1956. MSD current boundaries cover 525 square miles and encompass all of the City of St. Louis and approximately 80% of St. Louis County. MSD is a public agency, governed by a board of trustees, and follows the guidelines set for them in MSD's Ordinance 12559. MSD is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 9,649 miles of sewers: 2,980 miles of stormwater sewers,4,741 miles of sanitary sewers and 1,928 miles of combined sewers (combined sewers handle both wastewater and stormwater flows).
