One question in obesity research is the amount of physical activity required to avoid weight gain (Blair et al., 2004). The Institute of Medicine recommends an hour of daily moderate-intensity activity (e.g. walking 4 mph) for weight control (Institute of Medicine, 2002) in adults. The recommendation was based on confluence of theory, doubly labeled water studies, and epidemiologic observations, which concur that the physical activity level required to prevent obesity or maintain body mass is >=1.6 times basal energy expenditure (EE) (Brooks et al., 2004).
