JPostcoital (or emergency) contraception is used to reduce the likelihood of an unintended pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse (1,2). Insertion of a copper intrauterine device (IUD, or coil) within 5 days after unprotected sexual intercourse is a highly effective method of postcoital contraception, with a pregnancy rate of only 0.1% to 0.2% in one analysis of about 8300 postcoital IUD insertions (1).
