It wasn't to many years ago that it took a great deal of manpower to operate print finishing kit, with the post-press market playing catch-up with the front end of the production process for some time in terms of automation. However, due to the efforts of post-press kit manufacturers, makeready times began to fall and levels of production steadily increased as more automated machines emerged. Among these was the Renz ABL 500, launched 10 years ago. ABL stands for automatic binding line. The machine made its debut in 1998 and was targeted at the high-volume wire binding market, so was of interest to both trade print finishers and commercial printers.
