Exposure calculation is part of the process of chemical safety assessment (CSA), which examines the conditions under which substances can be safely used. According to the REACH Regulation, a substance’s use is considered safe when the exposure concentration to a specific environmental compartment and to the worker (via respiratory, dermal or oral uptake) is lower than the respective Pnec (predicted no effect concentration in the case of environmental exposure) or Dnel (derived no effect level for human exposure), and which means the risk characterisation ratio (RCR) is lower than one.
