Cryogels of poly(vinyl alcohol) [cryoPVAGs] are crosslinked hydrophilic and viscoelastic materials which swell when placed in contact wit water, buffer solution or biological fluids. These materials are highly porous and have good mechanical properties. Macroporous cryoPVAGs are produced by freezing, frozen storage and thawing aqueous polymer solutions several times. An increasing number of these cryogenic cycles will produce an elastic material of high mechanical resistance due to the increase in cristallinity. cryoPGAGs properties depend on the molecular weight, concentration of polymer, temperature and time of freezing; as well temperature, time of thawing and number of cryogenic cycles. These materials have been used in areas such as medicine, pharmacy and biotechnology because they are biocompatibles.
