Surface modification using polymers have attracted wide interest due to their applications in coatings, adhesives, sensors and fabrication of biocompatible surfaces. The use of a monoblock copolymer provides access to surface coatings with desired properties. On the other hand, employing a diblock copolymer for surface modification provides a strategy for immobilization of surface incompatible polymers. While one of the domains can be utilized to provide necessary anchoring to the surface, the other block (lacking any affinity for the surface) can be available for imparting desired functional attributes. Currently a variety of techniques exist for the attachment of polymers to surfaces such as physisorption, electrostatic, covalent etc. Self-assembled monolayers (SAM) provide access to modified surfaces onto which polymers can be 'grafted to' or 'grafted from'. In a 'grafting to' approach Crooks et al. have utilized mercaptodecanoic acid SAMs on gold surfaces for covalent attachment of poly(tert-butyl acrylate) as a route to hyperbranched poly(acrylic acid) films.
