Effect of Polyimide Interphase on Impact and Fatigue Propertles of PEEK/Carbon Fiber Composites

There is a great deal of interest in carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites given their advantages over thermoset matrix composites. High performance thermoplastic polymers are preferred because of their indefinite shelf life (no curing occurs in contrast with thcrraoscts), their excellent strength and lifetime at elevated temperatures and ihe reprocessability of thermoplastic composites. The manufacture of thermoplastic composites is complicated by high melt viscosity of matrix material which leads to poor wetting of the fibers. Powder-based techniques have received much attcnticn because they circumvent this processing problem. In particular, aqueous suspension prepregging of thermoplastic polymer powders shows great promise and the process is environmentally friendly. This method is especially useful for constructing composites with different intcrphascs.
