Current aircraft seem to be fairly content with the aviation fuel they are consuming. Whether it is Jet A/A-1 for commercial aircraft or JP-8/JP-5 for military aircraft, in general current aircraft seem well-adapted to their primary fuel. Why, then, is there an effort to develop new fules with enhanced capabilities? This paper will attempt to describe the trends in aircraft and engine designs that are drivint these enhanced fuel requirements. Primarily the trend is toward higher efficiency/performance aircraft and engines, where increased performance and efficinency come at the expense of higher engine temperatures and increased waste heat loads. In many circumstances, the most effective sink for this waste heat is the fuel. As fuel temperatures increase, the fuel can degrade through thermal-xoidative and pyrolytic processes, forming deposits would block screens and passages and interfere with controls. Options for mitigating these problems will be discussed.
