Disasters Drive the Industry: The requirements of emergency management are changing the face of the industry.

The needs of the emergency management community are more and more driving the development of software in our industry, and also impacting on the structure of the industry at global, regional and local levels. This trend has been underlined by events in Haiti. A massive earthquake struck the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on 12 January. Following this, the French Civil Protection Authority activated the International Charter for Space and Major Disasters. Since the beginning of the year, it has been activated for flooding in Peru, Bolivia and now in Haiti. The project manager was the French space agency, CNES.
