ANTONIA sat quietly with tears streaming down her cheeks. I reached over to take her hand in mine as we rode in quiet sadness to her village in the mountains of the Totonicapan region of Guatemala. The language barrier meant that Bev Abma had to translate Antonia's story of the recent loss of her brother and her struggles to provide for her family. Yet there was no need to translate her sadness or my extension of sympathy as I took her thin, work-worn hand in mine.
