The paper deals with buckling of metal silos.The calculations were carried out with an empty silo shell and an axisymmetric silo containing a granular bulk solid.In the first case,the buckling strength was calculated with a FEM using a linear and nonlinear analysis for different meshes.The studies were carried out with an axisymmetric imperfection in the meridional direction directed to the outside and inside of the shell.In the second case,a non-linear axisymmetric analysis was performed with a FEM on the basis of a polar elasto-plastic constitutive law describing the behaviour of silo walls and a polar hypoplastic constitutive law describing the behaviour of bulk solids.The intention of this analysis was to estimate the influence of the bulk solid on the buckling strength of silo walls.
