They seemed genuinely surprised to leam that I grew up in a rural, one-stoplight town surrounded by rolling hills. And they were even more surprised to find out that north of my. former central New York State hometown lies more than 6 mil- lion acres of wilderness—an area about that of the entire state of Vermont, in the largest park in the U.S. outside of Alaska.
