"SO, WHERE are you from?" "New York." At this response, my new neigh bors in Virginia would inevitably pepper me with questions about New York City. They seemed genuinely surprised to leam that I grew up in a rural, one-stoplight town surrounded by rolling hills. And they were even more surprised to find out that north of my. former central New York State hometown lies more than 6 mil- lion acres of wilderness—an area about that of the entire state of Vermont, in the largest park in the U.S. outside of Alaska.
