Some 3.8m t of plastic scrap was imported by China from January to June 2011, a year-on-year increase of 4%. At roughly 970,000 t, the EU was the largest net exporter of plastics scrap, the latest figures released by the Plastics Recycling Committee (PRC) of the China Plastics Processing Industry Association (CPPIA, Beijing; www.cppia.com.cn) indicate. The report lists Hong Kong as the second-largest exporter, accounting for 819,856 t, a number that most likely includes plastic scrap originally imported by the former British colony and then exported further to the mainland. Even though North American plastic scrap only accounted for 345,000 t, imports from this region grew by 13% year-on-year. By contrast, plastic scrap imports from the EU rose by just 6% over 2010. In the case of scrap sourced from Hong Kong, that figure was even down 7 % year-on-year, CPPIA found. At 1.5m t, PE accounted for roughly 40% of all plastic scrap imported to China in H1 2011, followed by PVC at 662,000 t and PET at 538,000 t.
