Finland's packaging producer Huhtamaki will close down its rigid plastic packaging production plant in Phoenix, Arizona, US, by the end of first quarter 2009, the company announced November 21. "Huhtamaki will begin the restructuring process at the Phoenix facility immediately and approximately 70 employees will be impacted," the company said. The company will take a one-time charge of about Eur5 million ($6.3 million) in Q4 2008 to cover the cost of the closure and the optimization. The plant is understood to consume mostly polypropylene, which goes into the manufacturing of rigid cups and food containers, among other products. The manufacturing equipment and operations will be consolidated into the group's other plastics operations in Coleman, Michigan, and New Vienna, Ohio.
