Flaxseed is a rich source of dietary fibre and lignans. Uncontrolled diabetes may induce dyslipidaemia, oxidative stress and kidney dysfunction. Thus, the beneficial health effects of consuming for 2 months bread fortified with defatted flaxseeds (DFB) as part of a prescribed, nutritionally adequate, dietary regimen was evaluated in type 2 diabetic patients and non-diabetic individuals in Egypt. Protective effects against diabetic complications were studied through evaluation of plasma lipids profile, lipid peroxidation, and hepatic and renal functions. The nutritional status of the participants was evaluated through an assessment of body mass index and nutrients intakes. Results show reductions in body mass index for both normal and diabetic patients after the nutritional intervention. Analysis of the mean dietary intake of participants at the beginning of the study revealed that for all subjects their intake was hyper-caloric; this was reduced to 79 and 84% of RDA in non-diabetic and diabetic participants, respectively, after treatment. After 2 months of consuming the DFB-fortified bread, the diabetic patients showed significant reduction of plasma glucose concn. All participants showed significant improvement in their plasma lipid profile and significant reductions of lipid peroxidation. It is suggested that the consumption of DFB in addition to a nutritionally beneficial dietary regimen may be helpful in preventing diabetes and its complications.
