Brazilian ethylene contract prices in September had a slight decrease of 1%. Despite the fact that ethylene contract prices in Europe went down Eur 18/mt in August, the Brazilian market had a smaller reduction due to the dollar against Reals exchange. Brazilian ethylene contract prices usually follow the European contract price movements with a month lag. After the decrease, the Brazilian ethylene contract price was heard at $1,203/mt FOB. The maintenance shutdown for Braskem’s largest steam cracker and two polyethylene plants in Camacari, Bahia was confirmed to start on November 4. “We are preparing everything to start the maintenance shutdown of our biggest cracker in November which is responsible for 55% of olefins production in Bahia. The downstream chain is already building some inventory”, a source said. The Camacari cracker has a nameplate capacity of 700,000 mt/year of ethylene.
