The US polystyrene price was set to climb during the next week as producers were negotiating an increase of up to 4 cents/lb. Feedstock prices moved higher this week, with the benzene contract for September settling 22 cents higher at 301 cents/gal. That settlement solidified styrene prices above 50 cents/lb for domestic customers, sources said. “There hasn’t been a decision yet if the full 4-cent increase will go through,” a polystyrene producer said Wednesday. “But everyone has nominated a 4-cent increase.” It was expected that at least 2 cents would be passed on to consumers, and perhaps the entire four cents, a source said. If the full increase is implemented, the domestic polystyrene price would climb to 75 cents/lb for general-purpose material, and to 82 cents/lb for high-impact material. Since the negotations were on-going, the domestic prices this week were assessed 2 cents higher.
