A proposed 3-cent increase in the November polystryene contract price was looking more likely to be successfully implemented this week as poor profit margins for feedstock styrene was causing rates to be cut. A jump in the benzene spot price - and November benzene contract nominations up 50 cents at 310 cents/gal - has caused styrene production costs to climb to near 43.5 cents/lb before any fixed costs or profit added.
