A bill is moving through the Alaska Legislature that would increase by 50% the limit on oil and gas lease acreage that one company can hold in the southern part of the North Slope. HB 246, sponsored by Gov. Frank Murkowski, passed unanimously in the Alaska House Oil and Gas Committee Apr 29. It would boost to a maximum of 750,000 acres the lease acreage the state would allow a single party to hold, provided no more than 500,000 of those acres lie along the coast of the North Slope.
