The experiment was conducted at the University of Delaware’s Research and Education Center, Georgetown. The trial area was chisel plowed, disked, and field cultivated on 28 Nov 07. Basamid 99 GR (400 lb/A) was applied with a 6-ft wide Garber drop spreader and incorporated. Basamid treatments differed from one another in application timing and incorporation method. Basamid was: (i) applied on 28 Nov and incorporated immediately to a 6-in. depth with a roto-tiller prior to bedding and laying plastic;(ii) applied on 28 Nov and not roto-tilled, but incorporated within 30 minutes by bedding and laying plastic; or (iii) applied on 16 Apr 08, roto-tilled to a 5-in. depth, then incorporated by bedding and laying plastic. The comparison treatment includeda spring application of Sandea 75 DF (0.67 oz/A) and Prefar 4E (6.0 qt/A) applied to freshly roto-tilledsoil (5-in. depth) just prior to bedding and laying plastic. Watermelons were transplanted on 10 Jun. Plots were 40 ft long; tops of beds were 30 in. wide on 8-ft centers. This study was arranged as a randomized complete block with four replications. Numbers of watermelon plants that were wilted or dead as a result of Fusariumwilt, vine lengths of three randomly selected plants in each plot, and overall plant vigor on a per plot basis (percent vine coverage in comparison to the healthiest plot) were recorded on 11 Jul. Ripe marketable fruit were counted, and weighed on 20 Jul and 2 Aug.
