Comparison of cotton seed treatments for control of southern root-knot nematode, 2012

Field trials evaluated cottonseed and in-furrow treatments for nematode control in Rumford loamy fine sand. The field was prepared for planting by ripping and strip-tilling rows into cotton stubble. Seed treatments (S) were applied by personnel with Bayer CropScience to FM 1740B2F treated with a base treatment of Baytan/Vortex/Allegiance. Plots were planted on 3 May in two, 30-ft rows spaced 36 in. apart in four randomized complete blocks. Temik 15G was applied with a Noble box to the seed furrow (F). A foliar spray of Orthene 97S at 8 oz/A was applied for thrips control on 22 May and 6 Jun. Baythroid XL at 2 fl oz/A on 16 Aug was applied for control of bollworm. Standard practices were followed for managing soil fertility, cotton growth, and weed control. All plots were harvested with a two-row spindle picker on 25 Oct. Rainfall in May, Jun, Aug and Oct was 1.91, 0.63, 4.68 and 3.57 in. above normal, respectively; rainfall in Jul, and Sep was 3.06 and 0.50 in. below normal, respectively. Rainfallduring the period totaled 34.89 in., which was 7.23 in. above normal. Average minimum air temperatures were 3°F above normal in May, Jul and Oct, 2°F above normal in Aug, 4°F below normal in Jun and 3°F below normal in Sep. Average maximum air temperatures were normal (±1°F) in Jun, Aug and Sep, 5 °F above normal in Jul, 4°F above normal in May and, 3°F above normal in Oct, according to records from a NOAA station four miles northwest of the test site. Normal represented the mean for the past 79 yrs of records.
