A golf green in South Hadley, Massachusetts was chosen to evaluate Neo-Tec nematicide. The green consisted of a mixture of annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass. Top-dressing over the years resulted in approximately 4 in. of sandy soil. Mechanical analysis of the top 4 in. showed it to be 88.6% sand, 9.1% silt, and 2.3% clay. USDA criteria classify this soil as a sand. Neo-Tec consists of 2.6% sesame oil, 2.6% lecithin and 94.8% granulated paper. The treatment and control were replicated six times(plots were 6 ft x 6 ft) and completely randomized. Neo-Tec was applied at the rate of 9.2 lb/1,000 sq ft (twice the labeled rate) 29 Sept 05; 16 May 06 and 31 Aug 06 following aerification. The material was uniformly applied to the plots with a plasticshaker with in. holes. Two additional applications were made in 2006. During 2007, applications were made on 23 Apr and 13 Sep following aerification. Additional applications were made on 27 May, 02 Jul, and 6 Aug. For each application that followed aerification, Neo-Tec was applied before the sand and lightly brushed to increase the amount of material moving into the soil; otherwise it was applied on top of the turf without brushing. After each application, irrigation was applied to settle the material into the turf. Soil was sampled on each evaluation date by removing 10, 1 x 4 in. soil cores per plot and bulking together. Nematodes were recovered by wet sieving/sugar flotation and identified to genus. The concentration of Criconemella (ring) and Tylenchorhynchus (stunt) nematodes were assessed in each sample. The data were subjected to analysis of variance.
