Curiosity about how many injuries resulted from the unstable positioning of extension ladders was the starting point for what turned out to be an interesting diversion. At the beginning, my curiosity was directed to the top ends of the rails and the top rung of extension ladders. How often was unwise placement of the rail ends or the placement of a straight horizontal rung against a round tree limb or pole responsible for falls and injuries? Reasonable questions, but two diversions snared my attention.
