This paper reviews the taxonomy, morphology, nutrient composition, origin and dissemination, reproductive biology (flowering, pollination, self-incompatibility and fruit development), genetic diversity (biodiversity, conservation, cytogenetics and interspecific hybridization), genetic improvement, genomics, molecular analysis and breeding, epigenetics and genetic transformation of almond. Future prospects are given.
