摘要

An automated drug-delivery device, such as the insulin pump illustrated in the figure, must deliver an accurate dosage as a function of time. The calculation of this optimal amount must be based on a mathematical model of the patient's response to the drug - and there is no tolerance for failures in the calculation. The calculation also needs to be performed on a small, embedded device, where power consumption issues could be critical. This is clearly a case where very sophisticated control performance is needed on simple, reliable and affordable hardware.
