A Vedic Approach towards Exploring the Education for Sustainable Development for the Contemporary Context

Humanity and societies have for perpetuity been in closealliance with their surrounding nature. The environments in whichsocieties entrench describe them, its requirements, functions andtheir eccentricity. Yet the human proceedings, the collective activitiesof the societies have put nature in an inferior position, for this reasonthe degradation hence caused to environment can only be understoodwithin the framework of the society supported submissively by thenature. To achieve this balance between environmental health withthe social well being, the societies require a sustainably wholesomedevelopment. Sustainable development has therefore become achiefly acknowledged goal of mankind today, and is the indispensableaspect of social development. To achieve the required SustainableDevelopment, what else but Education can come to the rescue of thehumankind. People all over the world have acknowledged thatcontemporary progress drifts are not sustainable and that publicconsciousness, development of knowledge, and indoctrination areessential for impelling the civilization in lieu of attainingsustainability. Consequently the much desired resolution; Educationfor Sustainable Development can be an universal approach toeducation with the aspiration of spawning a more appropriatelyworthier planet both for the present and the future generations tocome. The required education model being such that it abets inattainment of the awareness, prowess, demeanor, ethics andproficiency fundamental to contour a sustainable tomorrow. Thispaper intends to present the Vedic Philosophy as a guide towards themuch-needed goal of attaining absolute sustainable development. It’sa through a rigorous and thoughtful study of the Vedic approachtowards Nature and the various dimensions of human existences havealways supported and propounded a sustainable way of living. Thereare excerpts, verses and evidences of supporting the Vedic lifestyle asthe original sustainable approach towards nature.
