With the signing of a contract on the procurement of 400 high-performance locomotives of the 1016/1116 series in July 1997, the Austrian Federal Railways (OEBB) launched the greatest procurement initiative since the company was founded. All in all, including contracts on the procurement of diesel locomotives of the 2016 and 2070 series and an option on further orders, the contractual agreement involves a total of 700 locomotives. Referring to papers which had been presented at the Rail Transport Conferences in Graz in April 1998 and 2001 and which dealt with the general tender and contract conditions, this paper will discuss how the new series of locomotives was implemented, the problems experienced and will give an outlook to the future.
