Trains to operate without drivers or any other onboard personnel have to meet different requirements from those for trains for conventional operation. The technical outlay on retrofitting existing trains for automatic operation is much more expensive than ordering new constructed automatic trains. According to German standards and recommendations and taking special requirements into account a new train type DT3 for unmanned train operation has been developed by Siemens Transportation Systems, Erlangen, and VAG Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nuremberg. In this paper the technical specialities and requirements for driverless vehicles and the functional principles of 3 selected car components are described.
